Geoscientists and West Texas Energy

September 14, 2026

About this event

A century ago, the Santa Rita #1 flowed oil in West Texas. Geoscientists have played a major role in all aspects of West Texas energy production ever since. West Texas is the most important oil and gas region in the United States, and by extension the world. Produced water associated with oil and gas could yield significant critical metals, and also be cleaned up and used by the power industry, data centers and agriculture. In addition, the region produces significant energy from wind, has great solar potential, and small nuclear reactors could provide power for oil field operations and data centers, keeping demand off the ERCOT grid. As the next century unfolds, the nation will depend on West Texas geoscientists to remain a global energy leader.
