Peter Grossman
Peter Z. Grossman is Professor of Economics Emeritus at Butler University, Indianapolis, IN, where he held the Clarence Efroymson Chair in Economics from 1994–2019. He received his AB in philosophy from Columbia University and his MA and Ph.D. in economics from Washington University (St. Louis), where he studied under Nobel Laureate Douglass C. North. He has since specialized in energy economics and policy, law & economics, and US economic history.
Grossman has published seven books and more than 200 works in total. His most notable books include U.S. Energy Policy and the Pursuit of Failure (Cambridge University Press, 2013) and an award-winning co-authored textbook on energy and public policy (Cambridge, 3rd Edition, 2017). His scholarly articles have appeared in journals such as the Journal of Legal Studies and Energy Policy. For seven years, he was a regular economics columnist for The Indianapolis Star and has contributed commentary to outlets including The Wall Street Journal and The Christian Science Monitor.

Grossman received his AB in philosophy from Columbia University (New York) and his MA and Ph.D. degrees in economics from Washington University (St. Louis). At Washington University, he was a student of Nobel Laureate Douglass C. North, and since, he has specialized in the fields of energy economics and policy, as well as law & economics and US economic history.
Grossman has published seven books and many articles. His scholarly articles have appeared in such journals as the Journal of Legal Studies, Energy Policy, and the Journal of Policy History. He is the author of an acclaimed history of US energy policy, U.S. Energy Policy and the Pursuit of Failure (Cambridge University Press 2013) and is co-author of an award-winning textbook on energy and public policy (Cambridge, 3rd Edition 2017). Also, he is co-editor and principal author of, The End of a Natural Monopoly: Deregulation and Competition in the Electric Power Industry, (Taylor & Francis). Many years ago, he wrote the history of the American Express Company (Crown 1987, Beard Reprint 2006).
For seven years, Grossman was a regular columnist on economic issues for The Indianapolis Star, and he has contributed commentary to many magazines and newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal and The Christian Science Monitor. Including pieces intended for general as well as scholarly readers, Dr. Grossman has published more than 200 works.
