The Wind Energy Reality Check Nobody Wants to Have
Wind power advocates have spent decades promising a cleaner, cheaper, more secure energy future. A new issue brief from the National Center for Energy Analytics — Some Needed Realism on Wind Power, by Senior Fellow Jonathan Lesser, PhD and Deputy Executive Director Portia Roberts — takes a hard look at whether those promises have held up. The answer isn't flattering.
Five Days
Let us start with the number that should stop every wind advocate cold: in 2025, U.S. wind generation avoided the equivalent of fewer than five days of global CO₂ emissions. Total global energy-related CO₂ emissions were 35.5 billion metric tons, and wind's avoided share, even under the most generous calculation, amounted to between 165 million and 465 million metric tons. That's 1.6 to 4.7 days out of 365. And crucially, that figure doesn't account for the natural gas generation that must run less efficiently in the background to backstop wind's intermittency. The real number is lower.
The Cost Problem Nobody Is Counting
Those emissions figures are disappointing enough on their own, but the cost picture is what should be making headlines. Wind power is routinely praised for its low “levelized cost” — but that comparison is apples-to-oranges. It ignores the fact that intermittent electricity is worth far less than power you can actually dispatch when you need it. When backup resources are factored in, wind's costs climb substantially, and the consequences are already showing up in electricity markets. PJM Interconnection, the regional grid operator serving 65 million customers across 13 mid-Atlantic states, just cleared its capacity auction at the maximum allowed price of $333.44 per MW-day. Even at that price, PJM couldn't secure enough supply to meet reliability requirements. The bill to ratepayers: more than $16 billion over the next 12 months.
Reliability Is Not a Marketing Talking Point
The cost surge isn't an accident. It's a symptom of a deeper technical problem. Grid reliability depends on something called inertia: the ability of large spinning generators to keep producing electricity and absorbing shocks even when their fuel supply is briefly interrupted. Most wind turbines can't provide it. As wind capacity grows, so does the grid's exposure to sudden, destabilizing swings in output. New York's reliability planner has estimated that, by 2040, meeting the state's climate mandates through wind and solar would require a reserve margin exceeding 100%,meaning you'd need more backup capacity than peak demand itself. That's not a transition. That's doubling the infrastructure.
Land, Wildlife, and the Rare Earth Question
Then there's the question of wind power's environmental reputation, which doesn't hold up well under scrutiny either. Wind has the lowest power density of any generating resource: roughly one watt per square meter, compared to about 4,000 for nuclear and 2,000 for natural gas. Scaling up to meet serious electricity demand targets would require land areas that, in some analyses, exceed the entire footprint of the regions being served. The ecological costs compound from there: turbines kill raptors and bats, degrade soil through vibration, and in offshore environments threaten marine ecosystems including endangered species like the North Atlantic right whale. And the turbines themselves depend on rare earth magnets mined primarily in China under conditions with severe environmental consequences, meaning wind development effectively exports its pollution rather than eliminating it.
What Comes Next
The brief is not an argument against clean energy. It's an argument for honesty. The subsidies that once justified the wind buildout have survived long past any reasonable trial period, and the political incentives to preserve them remain powerful even as the evidence mounts against them. Wind power fails on all three criteria a modern energy system must meet: reliability, affordability, and genuine environmental responsibility. At some point, the math catches up.
